20 Pull-Up Challenge

A Little Background Info

A Marine Physical Fitness Test (PFT) consists of a 3-mile run, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and pull-ups.

After three years of taking this test, I have yet to get 20 pull-ups. I’ve came close with 19, but that's obviously not enough. Yesterday when we did the PFT, I only got 15, which I think is a terribly low number considering how i’m shipping out to OCS this summer.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I haven’t pushed myself hard enough to get the 20 because there is not enough competition around me pushing me to exceed the rest of the pack.

The Competition

I therefore challenge all of you guys living on 2nd Floor Fitten to get 20 pull-ups before I do. If you can already do 20, then you don’t count. But the rest of you, if you work your way up to 20 pull-ups before I do, I’ll be paying for you at the Friday Night Hangout of your choice.

I’m posting the “Armstrong Pull-Up Program” over by the pull-up bar in the kitchen. I challenge everyone to seek physical self-improvement and take me up on this competition.

You’ve got nothing to loose.

Summary

  1. Can’t do 20 pull-ups?
  2. Do them before Hector and you get a free dinner!

you, I have to work at pullups. While I have tried the Armstrong Program, I think it is a bit too much.

I have my own program I have used with some success. The trick, however, as you have pointed out, is to stick with it.

Here is my program:

-1 pull up, drop off the bar, rest
-2 pull ups, drop off the bar, rest
-3 pull ups, drop off the bar, rest
-etc, until you get to a number that you can do without reaching failure (that is, if you can ALMOST get 11, then work up ONLY to 10)
-subtract 1 from the number you were able to reach WITHOUT failing
-keep subtracting 1 until you get to 0

The neat thing about this work up is, if you do it as described, when you finish, you will know exactly how many pull ups you've done during your work-out session. For example, your top number is 10, and you did it as described (1, 2, 3...9, 10, 9, 8...1) then you will have done 100 pull ups (the total number is simply squared and it will give you the total pull up count).

I'll take you up on your challenge. I got 16 on Monday.

Game on.

Work on your rhythm, do weighted pull ups, and/or drop 5-10 pounds..

Those are the keys to doing 20 pull ups during the pft..
